CNN -
In August 2019, Saul Malek understood he 'd strike rock bottom.

His girlfriend had actually broken up with him, friendships had actually gone south, and he had cash problems.

" I discovered all my memories were truly gambling associated," Malek describes to CNN Sport.

" If I went out with my sweetheart and some pals, I 'd inform her at the end of the night, 'This is a terrific night since this bet won, and I was up this amount.'"

In a last-ditch effort to resurrect his relationship with his girlfriend, Malek says he informed his Gamblers Anonymous coach that he would not position a bet for 6 months. Almost five years later, Malek still hasn't wager.

' This is simple'
The billions of dollars that were banked on this year's Super Bowl, the millions that will be bet on Saturday's Kentucky Derby and stories like Malek's have brought into sharp focus the US' complicated relationship with sports betting.

It was in his college sophomore year that Malek states he was presented to an unlawful bookkeeper.

" It was absolutely dirty in terms of the legality and authenticity of all of it, however I didn't actually care," he said.

" I enjoyed betting with the bookies since I liked understanding that I was winning against a real person, that you know I was much better than them."

Malek vividly remembers his very first $10 win.

" It was a total warping of my mind," said Malek. "I know what I'm doing. This is easy, this is fantastic."

However, $10 bets ended up being $100 wagers, which rapidly changed into stakes including countless dollars.

" When I actually started losing and chasing the losses, I had an awareness that it was uneasy," confessed Malek.

" But I think I remained in such a mode of attempting to solve whatever that I didn't see it as actually much of a problem."

It wasn't till his moms and dads discovered "sketchy individuals messaging him," and his school grades becoming a problem that Malek, who is now a speaker on gambling awareness, understood he was in unfathomable.

A 'huge explosion'
It was in 2018 that the US Supreme Court struck down a 1992 federal law, which had forbidden most states from permitting sports wagering.

Fast forward to 2024 and the betting market is engrained in US sports culture with leagues, franchises, players and networks now partnering with betting organizations.

Nevada was the only state able to provide sports betting in 2018, however it's now legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia, with active legislation surrounding sports wagering in a more six states.

In February, when the Super Bowl was staged, Americans bet $10.49 billion on sports, a 24.8% year-over-year increase, according to the American Gaming Association's (AGA) gaming income tracker.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, the AGA was a record 67.8 million American adults (26%) would wager an estimated $23.1 billion on the occasion, a 35% boost from 2023.

And, overall, nearly $120 billion in legal bets were made in 2015.

" In America, as long as there have been sports to bank on, individuals have been wagering on sports," AGA senior vice president Joe Maloney informed CNN Sport in an interview.

" Democrats and Republicans, if there's something that they might concur on, unlawful betting was currently occurring."

Maloney says the 2018 choice was a chance to bring betters into the legal market - and for politicians to capture tax profits.

In 2023, more than $11 billion in state taxes were brought into state coffers.

According to the US Census, New york city state is without a doubt the leader in taxes collected.

" There was this rush by state federal government, quite frankly, to take advantage of betting profits and the gambling market was pleased to play along," Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), told CNN Sport.

The legal market
It's approximated that 2.5 million grownups in the US "meet the requirements for an extreme gambling problem in a given year," according to the NCPG.

Maloney maintains that one of the benefits of legalized sports gambling is the procedures that are put in place to assist those who suffer with gambling dependencies.

" The unlawful market has actually flourished for probably four to 5 decades in this country ... and there was never any issue betting resources at any serious level to support those that are demonstrating bothersome behavior," Maloney states.

" We're truly pleased with the fact that ... there's more money being dedicated to issue gambling in this nation than there ever has actually been."

Whyte says he is less persuaded.

" We have actually seen no proof of that whatsoever," states Whyte when inquired about legalized sports gambling helping suppress betting dependency. "We think the danger has actually gone up by about 30%."

" I remain in the District of Columbia right now. The mayor recently cut each and every single cent of public financing to avoid and deal with betting problems.

So right where the AGA and the National Council for Problem Gambling lies - the nation's capital - they eliminated all public funds for issue gaming," adds Whyte.

' The speed of development'
From LeBron James' NFL collaboration with DraftKings to ESPN launching a main sportsbook, it is becoming increasingly difficult to see sport without betting becoming part of the viewing experience.

A 2023 NCAA study surveyed young people aged 18-22. It states that among those who had actually seen sports betting advertisements, 52.8% said it made them more likely to wish to bet.

Among greater danger gamblers as many as 80% state the ads they have actually seen make them more most likely to bet.

Whyte says that these advertisements aren't too much of a concern if you're not in the greater danger groups but the connection among those who are is concerning.

Maloney counters that marketing is essential in taking bettors from illegal to legal markets.

" Advertising is really important upon markets being opened legally and managed to interact to betters that there is this chance to now wager in the legal market," stated Maloney.

The increase of ads and promotions is something that concerns NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

" I reside in the New York market. It's constant in terms of promos for people to bank on sports," said Silver just recently.

" I fret likewise about youths. It's, obviously, prohibited for youths to bank on sports," included the commissioner.

Ramon Zelaya, the mediator of Reddit's issue gambling online forum, concurs.

" The explosion of sports wagering has recorded the attention and engagement of younger bettors. Folks starting in their teens," Zelaya told the NCPG.

" I've had 16-year-olds publish on the subreddit. I have seen that the college age demographic tends to gravitate towards sports betting, online poker, trading cryptocurrency, that sort of thing."

Despite Silver's hand-wringing over the expansion of sports betting ads, the NBA in March said it had signed up with up with Sportradar to supply NBA League Pass users with the opportunity to look at live odds throughout games.

" Where sports wagering is legal, users can opt-in to have the benefit of viewing and choosing bets directly on NBA League Pass. When all set to put a bet, they are directed to FanDuel or DraftKings, the NBA's main betting partners, through a flawlessly ingrained link," the Sportradar declaration checked out.

Malek thinks that this lack of friction threatens.

" Having it right there, actually made it so hassle-free that I was able to simply click a button," he expained.

Maloney, however, points to the chances technological innovation offers the wagering industry and its customers.

" I think the speed of development today, especially as it connects to fan engagement and wagering, and in play betting and live wagering will continue to increase," stated Maloney.

" I think that the welcome with leagues, teams and industry partners will continue," he included.

Whyte's concern is that the majority of sports bettors "when they get deep into in play [betting] have no concept of the true odds and that it's nigh difficult to compute the true odds within the required 30 seconds you need to put an in-play bet.

The wagering market likewise points to its continued emphasis on "responsible gaming," stating three quarters of what it refers to as "conventional Super Bowl gamblers" report seeing a responsible betting message in the last year, up from 71% in 2023.

Sporting integrity
Recently the NBA banned Toronto Raptors gamer Jontay Porter from the league after an investigation found that the 24-year-old had breached betting rules, the league said.

The NBA stated its examination discovered that Porter had "violated league guidelines by divulging private info to sports bettors, limiting his own involvement in several video games for betting functions, and betting on NBA games."

With the rise of sports betting, this could end up being more typical and it's something that NBA commissioner Silver is concerned by.

"It's a primary sin, what he's accused of, in the NBA, and the ultimate extreme alternative I have is to ban him from the game," said Silver.

"There's absolutely nothing more serious, I think, around this league when it concerns gambling and wagering on our video games, which is a direct gamer participation," included Silver.

Porter didn't respond to CNN's request for comment when his restriction was announced.

In late March, the NBA said it was "looking into" anomalies including prop bets relating to Porter. Reportedly there were two specific games in which DraftKings Sportsbook flagged prop bets including Porter in its daily wagering insights.

A DraftKings spokesperson informed CNN after Porter was banned: "We have no comment on this story. In basic, it is important to keep in mind that a person of the numerous benefits of legal and regulated sports betting is that sports wagering operators identify and report suspicious activity and the integrity of sport is for that reason safeguarded in a way that does not exist in the prohibited market."
